Project Update as follows:

Dear Citizen of Ada,

You may have received a notification from your insurance agent regarding FEMA’s notification that a good portion of Ada will be located in the 100-year flood zone effective September 30, 2015 (to determine if you are in the flood plain, follow the instructions beneath my signature). You may have attended the public hearing, read about it in the Index or have heard this on the radio but we are finding out that not everyone has heard about the status of our community. As such, we are sending you this letter to assist you in learning more about the flood project.

What does this mean for you

  • If you live in a part of Ada that will be designated in the flood zone, you should purchase a flood insurance policy no later than August 29, 2015. The reason is quite simple, you must purchase the policy 30 days or more in advance. We are already learning that there is a wait for some insurance companies so you will want to call your insurance agent upon receipt of this letter. Policies should cost $300-$400 for the year. After that, you will be grandfathered into the current rate with 18% increases every year thereafter. Call the City or your insurance agent if you do not know whether or not you ate in the 100-year flood plain.  Policies are only required for those who live in the new flood zone with a mortgage, a second mortgage, credit line, or any loan against your home.
  • Should you decide to not purchase flood insurance by August 29, 2015, there is a chance that you will have to pay $4,000-$6,000 every year as your lender will impose insurance on your home.

What is the City of Ada doing to help

  • The City is working with FEMA to get most of the community out of the flood zone. The hope is to have this accomplished in the fall of 2015 however city government is dependent on a determination by the federal government; we are doing what we can to expedite the process. As soon as this component of the project is complete, you will be notified via the Index, KRJB and Facebook.
  • The City was recently appropriated the money necessary to complete the flood mitigation project. The target for completion and certification is fall 2016 for completion of the levee.
  • The City is available to help you should you have any questions regarding this program.

Please contact City Hall should you have any questions, 218.784.5512.
